Gemotions

The hum of the refrigerator was the only sound in the kitchen. John poured himself a glass of iced tea and leaned against the counter, surveying the clean space. He’d spent the morning reorganizing the pantry, a satisfying activity. He had nothing pressing scheduled for the rest of the day.

He walked up the stairs to his parents’ old bedroom, now used as a storage space. He was looking for his grandfather's old military medals. Hidden in a drawer he had overlooked, he found a battered file folder. Inside, a single sheet of paper.

His grandfather's name, printed at the top. A typed letter, filled with formal language, yet somehow intensely personal. A resignation letter. John felt a deep, calming influence wash over him. He sat in the worn armchair, the letter in his hand, and felt utterly at peace.
